Geology Field Trip: Meta-lling through South Mountain

Hosted by geologist Jeri Jones, with geoscientist Brittany Martin.

The day will be spent traveling through South Mountain to look at several sites, providing a general understanding of the complex geology of this part of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Stops include Antietam Cove, Pearl Spring, Waynesboro Reservoir, Iron Springs and Jack’s Mountain Tunnel, where we’ll examine the rocks and the tectonic forces that acted on them.

Note: The hike to Jack’s Mountain tunnel is 1.5 miles round trip. Other stops will be limited walking.

• Collecting of rock samples permitted at selected sites. Cameras are welcome and guidebooks will be distributed.

• Transportation by personal vehicle(s). Meeting point, itinerary, directions and map provided upon registration.

Bring bag lunch. Limit: 10 cars. Adults (age 15 & up): $30; Institute member discount: $5

COVID-19 protocols will be followed. Masks required during stops. Signed waivers required for registration.
